The Declaration of Independence says that we are all created equal. I’m always up for a good debate, even if it’s with our Founding Fathers. None of us are created equal. We are all created individual. We deserve equal treatment under the law. We don’t deserve to be lumped into a category that’s neat and tidy and snug and convenient. That applies to how we prefer to be communicated with.
The Comfort Zone of Communication is convenient. I have my style and you must adapt to me. I have my tricks, my phrases, my manipulations, my persuasions that I’ve practiced for years and years and seem to have worked for me. I can go into a situation and pull out the old stuff and get by.
Or can I?
Today’s workforce is calling out to its leaders to be true, authentic, real, vulnerable, naked (ok, not literally naked!). The old tricks are going to be seen. We want our leaders to make it personal.
It’s up to me to get present in a conversation and understand who I’m talking to. How do I create a bridge of communication to reach that person on a personal and motivating level? That bridge of communication is also the bridge out of my comfort zone.
Every time I’m authentic and purposeful in my desire to connect, I expand more. I make the relationships important and I make your emotional needs important. That creates trust and connection, which in turn can’t help but create results.
They don’t care what I know, they care that I care. When I navigate out of my communication comfort zone to fully connect with you, I care and great things can happen.
